Tres's paintings are personal journeys of color. Her intensely pigmented work is the result of soft pastels on a variety of smooth and textured surfaces. Many of the stroke and color techniques are accomplished with some blending, multiple layering, and underpaintings created with watercolor, alcohol, and complimentary color pastel.
Pastels, are pure pigment mixed with a minute amount of binder, usually gum and clay. Due to the mineral make up, dozens of minute facets refract light to the viewers eyes and create that special look and depth that pastels can bring. Pastels on permanent archival surfaces will hold their color for centuries and not fade, crack or yellow as other mediums often do.
Tres favors the pastel medium because of the relationship of the sticks of color and the hands, touching the painting surface, and a direct approach to creating art. Tressa works both in studio and "plein air" in Maryland, North Carolina, the UK and Europe.
